About this Sacred Grove

Sayle Devrai is a sacred forest located in the Sangameshwar region of Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra. The grove covers approximately 14 hectares and contains a diverse assemblage of trees. The vegetation is dominated by Terminalia species and teak (Tectona grandis), along with species such as Mangifera indica, Sapindus mukorossi, Plumeria rubra, Mimusops elengi, Syzygium cumini, Ficus arnottiana, Caryota urens, Hydnocarpus pentandra and Sterculia foetida. Biomass was estimated using tree DBH and height measurements, wood density and biomass expansion factors.

Locally called a Devrai (meaning "God's Forest"), these patches are preserved by nearby village communities through traditional folk beliefs and taboos against cutting wood or hunting.
